Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Reports Record May Passenger Activity
Reminds Passengers to Plan Ahead for Busy Summer Travel

Mesa, Arizona — The number of travelers flying through Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (Gateway Airport, Airport) has set a new record, with May 2024 marking the busiest May ever at the Airport. 146,384 passengers came through the Airport this May, a 7% increase over the previous record May set in 2022. 

“May 2024 represented another month of record passenger activity at Gateway Airport,” said J. Brian O’Neill A.A.E., Executive Director/CEO of the Airport. “This summer, air travelers will have more options to visit Arizona or jet away to one of the 45 nonstop destinations available on Allegiant.”

In February, Gateway Airport opened a new a new 30,000 square foot, five- gate terminal addition that included additional gates, expanded hold rooms, new retail space, and additional outdoor dining opportunities.

Additionally, the TSA has recently updated equipment at the Security Screening Checkpoint to enable officers to screen passengers more efficiently. This new equipment allows travelers to insert their ID directly into the scanner, skipping the boarding pass scanning process.

The peak holiday travel season began Memorial Day Weekend and will run through Labor Day on September 2nd. Passengers can expect busier than normal roadways, parking lots, and security lines at all airports and should plan accordingly.

  • Airports have rush hours too. Arrive early and pack accordingly. Peak times for the Airport are generally between 5-7 a.m. and 2-6 p.m. Arrive two hours before your flight. If you are not checking a bag and have your boarding pass, you can go straight to the security checkpoint.
  • Parking lots closest to the terminal fill up. The Ray Road Economy Parking Lot will always have spaces available, and there’s a free shuttle to the terminal every 7 minutes. Current parking status can be found atwww.gatewayairport.com/parking 
  • Pack smart by contacting TSA or visiting our What Can I Bring page before you leave home.
  • Use Flight Status Page and Cell Phone Lot. Double-check your flight status with your airline before coming to the airport. If you are picking up friends or family, take advantage of the Cell Phone Lot located on Sossaman Rd south of Ray Rd.
